2011 BMW X5 Test Drive

Miami—BMW has finally given its X5 a proper facelift, and with it, a slew of new powerplants that manage to give the meaty SUV an entirely new feel. For the first time, the vehicle will get its power from the same potent engines found in the company’s X6, and that means more power and fuel efficiency for the smallish off-roader. Read more…

First Look: 2011 BMW X5

While BMW spent last year adding upgraded engines to its lineup, the X5 sat untouched, forced to enjoy only the 3.0-liter diesel found in the xDrive35d. A potent mill, yes, but the other Bimmers received a more efficient, single turbo inline-six; if they didn’t, more power came to their twin-turbo setup. A 400-hp twin-turbo V-8 headlined the X6, while the M versions of it and the X5 boasted a silly 555 hp. That same vehicle also took the “utility” out of “sport-utility vehicle”—literally—being assigned the BMW-invented “sport activity vehicle” moniker instead. The rechristening was a clever trick that attempted to manage expectations not met by its small cargo area, which held less than that of the 5-series wagon of the day. Read more…

2011 BMW 335is

Taking the venerable BMW 3 series to its most powerful, non-M, variant, BMW has just announced the 2011 BMW 335is. At 320 hp, 332 lb-ft torque (or 370 lb-ft when launch control is used on the new 7 speed transmission), the 335is will reach 60 mph in 5 seconds flat. For comparison, a Chevy Camaro SS does the 0-60 march in 4.6 seconds. BMW, along with its other 2011 3 series updates, equips the 335is with new high-depth LED xenon headlamps, Read more…

Probably not, but it does mean ze Germans are so confident in their whiz-bang transmissions the days of the row-your-own manual shifter are probably limited, at least behind the wheel of a Bimmer. The center console prominently shows BMW’s gear selector with an “M” logo plastered on top. The steering wheel is new and smaller than a normal 5-Series with paddle shifters behind the rim.
