MUNICH, Germany — BMW’s M performance group continues to dribble out details on the upcoming 1 Series M Coupe, which will break cover officially at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January and should begin reaching the first European customers in early summer.

In an interview with M development boss Albert Biermann posted on the group’s Web site, the price of the 1 Series M Coupe was pegged at “somewhere between the 135i Coupe and the M3 Coupe, with a clear tendency toward the 135i,” according to Biermann.

In the U.S., the 2011 BMW 135i Coupe is priced from $36,925, while the 2011 M3 Coupe starts at $59,275.

Biermann said the price of the 1 Series M Coupe will make it “more accessible” than other M-branded performance models.

Biermann confirmed that the car will be powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 developing about 340 horsepower and will be offered exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. He said the 1 Series M Coupe will have “many similarities to the chassis, brakes and rear differential of the M3.”

He said the 1 Series M Coupe will weigh about 3,300 pounds and will be about 3.2 inches wider than the 135i. In terms of performance, Biermann added that “the 1 Series M Coupe will be about 10 seconds faster than the M3” on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.
