M Version of BMW 1 Series Due in 2011

NURBURG, Germany — BMW is preparing an M-badged edition of the 1 Series for 2011 and plans to replace the V10 engine in the current M5 with a turbocharged V8.

In an interview with German Web site auto-news.de, M GmbH boss Kay Segler confirmed that BMW will launch an M variant of the 135i coupe. Segler said it will not be called M1, since the name has already been used on the limited-edition, Giugiaro-penned midengine sports car that BMW sold from 1978 to 1981.

The so-called 135i M—which likely will get a different nameplate—is expected to feature a higher-output variant of the turbocharged 300-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-6 that powers the 2011 135i coupe and convertible.

In the same interview, Segler said the next-generation M5 due in 2011 will eschew the current 500-hp 5.0-liter V10, in favor of a version of the 555-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that powers the X5 M and X6 M.
