Two world firsts from BMW

BMW unveiled two new models today for the first time, the 6 Series convertible and 1 Series M coupe.
Adding momentum to its recently launched new 6 Series coupe, BMW added a convertible version.
The new 2012 6 Series convertible is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. Interior space is also improved with more head and legroom.
The engine line-up starts with a turbocharged 3.0liter six-cylinder producing 320 horsepower. A turbocharged 4.4liter V-8 with 400 horsepower also is offered. Both engines are paired with eight-speed automatic transmissions.
Sales are expected to start in the spring.
The 1 Series M coupe is a hot version of BMW’s entry level car, with 340 horsepower on tap from a twin-turbo 3.0liter six-cylinder engine.
Ian Robertson, BMW Group’s sales and marketing chief, emphasized the importance of the North American market to the company’s overall success. With global sales of 1.4 million-plus units in 2010, BMW’s Group had a 13.6 percent increase and “is the clear leader in the premium segment,” says Robertson.
US market sales are second only to Germany among world markets, but only a few hundred units separate the markets. The sales target for the BMW Group, which includes Rolls-Royce and Mini brands, in 2011 is 1.5 million units.
