Spied: 2012 Bmw 1-Series shows its covered body

While the next-generation BMW 1-series is still currently testing, it would be a good idea to whet our appetites before the real thing arrives with these spy pictures. As seen on these pictures of the five-door 1-series that will be launched in 2011, a modular platform with BMW‚ traditional longitudinal engine layout is featured. The 2011 model, which is codenamed F20, has some features that will be shared with the next-gen 3-series. Aside from the standard rear-wheel drive, BMW is also thinking about adding four-wheel drive by using the system designed for the X1. The standard rear-wheel drive is claimed to be a feature that makes the 1-series stand out from all of its hatchback rivals. This 1-series will also receive the new turbocharged three-cylinder engine that will be installed on the entry-level models. It forms an integral part of BMW‚ future Efficient Dynamics program. According to sources from BMW‚ R&D center, the new engine generates between 110bhp and 160bhp, depending on its state of tune. It‚ expected that as a 110bhp unit, it should be able to deliver combined fuel consumption of more than 70mpg and CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km. A turbocharged 1.6-liter powerplant is also being developed for the new 1-series. This powerplant, which will replace the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine, will deliver between 150bhp and 200bhp
