2012 BMW Z4 Likely to Receive Four-Cylinder Engine

BMW reportedly has plans to introduce a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the base Z4 in the U.S., replacing the naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six found in the current Z4. Though specific launch details were not provided, the new engine is expected to arrive later this year as a 2012 model.

Presently, the base engine in the 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive30i churns out 255 hp, 220 lb-ft of torque and an approximate combined fuel efficiency of 23 mpg. The new engine of the 2012 BMW Z4 is anticipated to pump out at least 200 hp as well as a torque of about 220 to 230 lb-ft.

Owing to the decreased number of cylinders, the new engine is expected to be lighter leading to improved fuel economy of the 2012 Z4 in the range of around 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 20 mpg city/30 mpg highway.

With the introduction of the four-cylinder Z4, BMW will begin a new phase of smaller engines in the U.S. Meanwhile, a turbocharged 4-cylinder is also expected for the next generation BMW 3-Series lineup.

Though the cost of the 2012 BMW Z4 is yet to be announced. we expect the price to from the $47,375 for the current BMW Z4.

Incidentally, the last four cylinder BMW models to grace U.S. shores were the BMW 318ti and the original BMW Z3.
