Spy Shots: 2012 BMW M6 Convertible

We already have a pretty clear indication as to what the new generation 2012 BMW 6-Series will look like following the release of images for the Concept 6-Series Coupe, which is set to make its world debut this week at the 2010 Paris Auto Show. Now, however, we can take a closer look at the high-performance M6 variant thanks to these latest spy shots of a prototype undergoing testing at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit.

This particular prototype is for the M6 Convertible, which along with the M6 Coupe spied earlier, should hit the market in early 2012.

Compared to previous prototypes of the regular 6-Series models, the M6 Convertible seen here packs some slight yet significant changes. In the photos, we can see quad exhaust outlets, reworked front and rear ends to snag more airflow while minimizing lift, and a similar but sleeker overall profile compared to the current model. The oddball boat-tail rear-end of the current 6-Series also looks to be much improved as confirmed by the Concept 6-Series Coupe.

Also gone is the former model’s high-rev V-10, dropped due to strict emissions regulations and BMW’s rejuvenated love for forced induction. In its place is likely to be a version of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 found in the X5 M and X6 M. In the performance SUV duo, the potent powerplant delivers 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque–enough to send the big SUVs from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. This should be more than enough output for the smaller and lighter M6 Coupe and Convertible.

The new V-8 will be matched to BMW’s M-DCT dual-clutch system, as found in the M3, but a conventional six-speed may still be offered for purists.
